Title: A Practitioner’s Guide to Motivational Interviewing


Description: Participants will develop skills regarding how to utilize Motivational Interviewing-inspired interventions aimed at illuminating change talk with clients in a compassionate, empowering, and guided manner. When the trainee completes this course, he/she will:


  • Learners will be able to describe how to use Motivational Interviewing micro-skills and structured activities used to elicit change talk.
  • Learners will be able to describe the research that guides Motivational Interviewing's increasing focus on recognizing, reinforcing, and evoking change language.
  • Learners will be able to describe how to use Motivational Interviewing      interventions with clients in a variety of settings and with numerous       behavioral targets.
  • Learners will be able to describe how to implement specific tangible skills used to invite change talk with clients including the Importance and Confidence Rulers, and Values Card-Sort exercise.


This course is primarily designed for clinicians in the earlier stages of their career, or for more advanced clinicians reviewing basic concepts in this area.

Bernard Showers, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker working as an outpatient mental health and a substance abuse clinician. In September, 2016 Mr. Showers became one of approximately 1,500 trainers from around the world certified to offer training in Motivational Interviewing by the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers.  Mr. Showers is also an adjunct professor with Shippensburg University’s MSW Program in Shippensburg, PA as well as the University of Maryland’s School of Social Work in Baltimore, MD.  Mr. Showers resides in Lebanon, PA.
